Jacqueline’s Answer

Hi Alex,

First thing is to get a 4 year college degree. If you are interested in Law enforcement, whether it be federal, state or local, you will need a degree. The FBI looks for all types of skills such as language, technology, engineering, etc. You will need to have some professional work under your belt as well. You will have to meet all the physical requirements, be able to pass a full criminal background which would include polygraph and drug test. You have to be flexible and willing to move around the country. You may apply for a local field office but that doesn't mean that you will get it or that you won't get transferred. If accepted to the FBI academy or another law enforcement training program, you can expect a minimum of 20 weeks of training.

Jacqueline recommends the following next steps:

Go to/finish college, figure out what specialty you might be interested in within a law enforcement agency and try to study that in school, find out the exact requirements to apply to the agencies that you are interested in, apply and be patient!

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Alex,
The FBI like most federal law enforcement agencies look for a minimum of a four year degree. Federal law enforcement agencies also offer Veteran Preference. The FBI generally does not hire people under age 27 and look for higher skilled degrees such as a Law or Accounting Degree. They also look for special skills from military members and experienced law enforcement. I recommend visiting USA Jobs.gov to learn about the multitude of federal law enforcement Special Agent positions- there are over 100 investigating various criminal codes - there are more than 75 Offices of Inspector General and many other agencies that in addition to working their own agency cases work jointly with the FBI in large scale operations

Nicole recommends the following next steps:

Visit www.usajobs. Gov and search “special agent” or “criminal investigator”
Complete a 4 year degree
Intern with a federal agency
