Hwal’s Answer

Francessca,

Are you interested in working in mental health? I trained as a mental health counsellor in Australia and have worked in mental health in both countries, so I might be able to help you with some questions. What jobs do you already know of?

Hwal

Thank you comment icon Hwal, Thank you fro your response! Yes I am interested in working for mental health. The jobs that I know of already is psychology and counseling. I do have a question, what high school classes would I need to take to reach this career? francessca
Thank you comment icon You're welcome, Francessca. There are many different areas you can go into as a psychology major, but it seems like you might be mainly interested in working directly with people? Being a counsellor can be very rewarding, and you can work in many different settings, such as school, hospital, outpatient clinic, and alcohol and drugs, to name a few. Regardless, introductory psychology and ethics could be appropriate classes to take. Then, you could maybe try developmental psychology and/or biology. I hope this helps. Hwal Lee

Carrie’s Answer

Hi
I am a LMHC. Psychology has a lot of options explore. I got my Bachelor's in Psychology. Then went on to get my Masters in Mental Health Counseling. I am able to work with any populations I wish. I work in private practice & am also using my degree to work in Human Resources. HR allows you to work with many different personality types, problems etc using a lot of the same skills a counselor uses. I have worked in hospitals & mental health facilities as a social service case manager in which I would do psychosocial assessments (to learn about their history), lead group therapy &learn about a variety of different mental illnesses. Here are some ideas of other options. http://www.careerprofiles.info/psychology-bachelors-degree-career-options.html

There are a variety of jobs that help people improve mental health. Clinical researchers aim to study how mental health changes due to different risk factors and treatments. Counselors and clinicians are focused on actually delivering mental health care to different patient populations. Jobs in industry allow for specific development of research instruments and treatments. Often time, jobs vary based on the type of treatment, patient or client population, and setting (ex: schools vs. hospitals).
