I just began Dual Enrollment which pushed me to think about my future career. I've been stuck between an English teacher and a guidance counselor for the longest. Would it be wise to Major in Secondary English Education and minor in Sociology (for counseling) ?

Elizabeth’s Answer

Dual enrollment is such a great way to get started on your college career. If you are just starting out, take a class in both areas and which ever course interests you most, go for that one.  You may find that a double major could also be the answer.  Sociology will help you understand group dynamics, so you may want to consider psychology as a second choice since that will focus on individual choices. It sounds like you are giving your career a lot of thought.  Another way to learn and make that decision is internships.  Nothing helps like trying out a job and finding you love it or its just not for you.

Elizabeth recommends the following next steps:

Investigate the curriculum for sociology, psychology, and education
Review possible internships in these areas

That sounds like a great major and minor for your goals. A minor in Psychology is a good option too.

Hello, Although Sociology will provide a "foundation" for guidance counseling, you may also want to consider courses in "Personal Coaching" and Professional Coaching" both of which will provide instruction for personal and professional development for individuals who are looking for "next steps" in their curriculum and future career.

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Look in to available career and professional coaching opportunities

Think about back up plans. What if teaching doesn't work out or you end up not liking it? I would choose a minor in something that can give you a tangible return such as business/accounting (take a CPA test). Talk to a counselor about a minor that could lead to more of a career path and help you with plan B. Good luck.

Simeon’s Answer

That would be a good idea; you might even want to consider double majoring depending on if you can make the hours work. Also, be sure to talk to the sociology and English professors about your plans. Chances are that they'll be able to advise you on the best way to make your plans a reality. Depending on your state, you might be able to enter the teaching side of things and pass a certification necessary to do school counseling.
