Is data analytics a big piece of the airline/aviation industry? What kinds of jobs are options for me?

My mom keeps telling me that I should get a job in analytics but I'm not even sure I know what that means in terms of the actual jobs I would get. Can you help me understand what exactly that is and what I would be doing in that kind of a role at Cathay Pacific? Yes, there are parts of the Airline industry that use data analytics, however, aviation is a huge industry and there are so many opportunities to pursue in it. Engineering and Operations Research are also ways to advance if data analytics are not your thing.

Jonathan’s Answer

Yes, data analytics is a huge part of the airline industry. Data is used for everything from revenue management, to operations analysis, to finance, to customer service and probably many other disciplines. You should pursue getting further education on data analysis. This will only help you in any job you get in an airline or any other field. But remember that pulling data for analysis is only part of the equation, you must learn to tell a story using this data.

Jennifer’s Answer

Data analytics, or “big data,” is a huge part of all industries. Numbers tell companies a story, and insights can be used to manage risk, plan strategies, and predict customer behaviors. There is a big push in today’s world to know today what customers will do or want in the future. Companies use numbers and trending to help them meet supply chain needs, resource planning, as well as pricing. If you have the opportunity to do so, get experience in pulling and analyzing big data from software such as Tableau or Python in a project.
