Kimberly’s Answer

Hi Haluka, the most practical route is typically a 4 year college degree or military. I can't say exactly what kind of degree is the most beneficial because the needs of the FBI are always changing. They are involved in various types of crime and are always looking for people with financial, informational technology (computers), military and social science backgrounds. Your best bet is to get an internship through a college and get your name out there. Start talking to as many people as you can in the field-that's called networking and your most valuable resource. Good luck

Kimberly recommends the following next steps:

Internship through your local college

Hi Haluka,

Aside from the timeline for educational requirements (a bachelors degree or higher is required), the application process to become a special agent in the FBI can vary , as the length physical fitness preparation and thorough background checks depend on the individual applicant. If you do not want to become a special agent, the timeline and eligibility requirements will differ. Roles within the FBI include anything from counselors, to lawyers, to photographic and communications specialists.

According to the FBI website: "The Special Agent application process generally takes at least one year and often longer, depending upon annual federal funding levels and hiring goals." See https://www.fbijobs.gov/career-paths/special-agents/FAQs for additional info.

However, do not be discouraged if this timeline is longer than you anticipated - the FBI offers highly fulfilling careers, and if you are a driven applicant who will find a sense of belonging with the Bureau, the time and careful effort spent in preparation will be worth it! The rigorous application process not only tells the FBI if you are a good fit for them - it lets you know if the FBI is a good fit for you, too!
