In order to be a surgeon, how many years do you need to be an intern?

I am a sophomore at Boston Collegiate Charter School and I was wondering how many years you have to be an intern in order to be a surgeon. #general-surgery #heart

After college you do 4 years of medical school and then you need to do residency. For general surgery, you do 5 years of residency. If you want to subspecialize, you would do a fellowship after that, which is usually 1-2 years. Internship is the first year of residency, so for general surgery, you would be an intern for 1 year and a resident for 4 more years.
