Ashlee’s Answer

Hi Lillian, your clients could range from children - elderly. This is because it depends on the type of OT that you become and where you work. If you work in a school setting, for example, you may work with children on enhancing their motor skills, like holding their pencils correctly. Or, if you work in an Assisted Living Facility, you may work with the elderly on care routines, like dressing etc. Other job locations include Mental Health Facilities, Outpatient Centers, and Hospitals. Therefore, right now, I would recommend focusing on volunteering/interning to see if there is an age group or location you prefer more. I hope this helps!

Haley’s Answer

Lillian,

I agree with what Ashlee said, and I have some more settings to add! Occupational Therapists can also work in the criminal justice system at a juvenile facility or a prison, at a home health agency, and more. At outpatient centers you could be working with children with disabilities, adults who have been injured, and elderly folks who are recovering from surgery. At hospitals you can work in any department. Your options are very open!

You should spend the time figuring out what setting you would enjoy spending time in.
