Jacinta’s Answer

To add on to the previous answer, you would also want to make sure you are aware of local county regulations. You would need to obtain 12 months of experience under a supervisor who is certified to be able to apply for the final certification after you have passed all the exam sections.

Geoffrey’s Answer

You need a Bachelors degree in Accounting, most universities have similar core courses for this (e.g. Basic and Intermediate Financial Accounting, Economic, Statistics, Marketing etc). There are also Electives that one can choose from.

After your degree you can register to take the Certified Public Accountant exam (Chartered Accounting in some parts of the world). Once approved, you can start the studying process which can be self -study if you buy the materials or offered by various companies at a fee.

You may also look at University programs that have built in the certification process as part of their curriculum, so you take the certification exam at the end of all your university coursework.

all the best

Ali’s Answer

Hi Mallamma

Chartered Accountants make a good pay, in addition to job security and very high demand across the globe, though the journey is challenging.
A bachelor degree in BCOM, ACC, or any business major is the founding ground to fulfill the educational requirements. In addition to the educational requirement, work experience is essential. In some licensing boards/jurisdictions requirements do vary between educational requirements and experience, also for the CPA, most boards require 150 credits in addition to 30 credits in accounting courses excluding the entry level courses.

I would suggest you enroll in university programmes that integrate chartered accountant requirements within their syllabus, so you can get everything covered, and be well prepared to ace the examination from 1st attempt.

Hope this is useful

Elaine’s Answer

Hi Mallamma N., Sharing my experience here.

After i completed my national education in my country, i had signed up for Certified Accounting Technician ( CAT) , UK qualification that offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This course last about 1 year.

Further on that, i proceed with ACCA (Master Degree) . The experience of CAT will waive some of the papers in ACCA.
Same with CPA as suggested above, the studying process which can be self -study or attending the classes offered by the colleges or universities at your country.

A pro for taking CAT instead of Bachelors degree in Accounting, the process of this path is much faster. But you will have to ensure you have a strong base in accounting knowledge.

Please note that you would also need to obtain 36 months of experience under a supervisor who is certified to be able to apply for the final certification after you have passed all the exam sections, or you can do this concurrently.

For me, I attended CAT in college, then self study for ACCA while concurrently working with one of the big 4 to earn my 36 months experience.

Hope this can shed a light to your tertiary education decision.
