Sam’s Answer

As an English teacher, the best advice I have to immigrants who need to learn English for their careers is to make sure English is part of your life when you are not at school. English as a second language classes are great, but the one thing that is very important is to use English when you are relaxing too. Watch TV in English with English subtitles and read books in English. Reading in English is a great way to improve your writing skills. If you can get the audiobook and the regular book, that is even better. Many times you can find the book and audiobook at the library. Also, listen to American music and sing. It sounds odd, but it’s good pronunciation practice. Good luck.

Giaan’s Answer

Hi Nhan,

Anything is possible if you put the time and lots of effort into it. I believe in you! I also come from an immigrant family and the language barrier can be a huge obstacle for us so one of the suggestions I have is to try and allow you to think in English and have people that you can converse to in English on a regular basis. Reading is also a big part of learning a new language as well so pick up something that you're interested in and read it about it. Then discuss it with other people. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me.

Giaan recommends the following next steps:

Also I'm not sure if you're Vietnamese but if you are, I'm always down to help a fellow immigrant friend :)
Thank you comment icon First word I would like thank you about what you comment on in my question and these thing that we're have talking about that. The way you talk to me is so pleasant and approachable makes me unable to think that you are an expert who communicates the best way of learning to like-minded people who are learning English. As you told me," the language barrier can be a huge obstacle for us so one of the suggestions I have is to try and allow you to think in English and have people that you can converse to in English on a regular basis".that's also my problem that I am asking myself to do better in my future studies and work. And the last word let me excuse myself if I use English in the wrong way and the spelling is wrong. thank you very much. I am a Vietnamese and nice to meet you. nhan

Hi Nhan. In order to be college-ready, you will want to take the TOEFL. This is the English Language test for college admissions entrance. https://www.ets.org/toefl
If you score well, then you wil be in a position to apply directly to a 4-year college. You will take this test instead of the SAT or ACT. If you do not score well, no worries, because you can start at a community college, slowly build your English skills, and then prepare for the rigor of a university. This is important because you will do a LOT of advanced reading in English, and will have to write as well. If you start at the community college, pick classes that will transfer to the university. This way, you will not lose time working toward your goal. In other words, your TOEFL score will give you direction on your next steps.
For fun, you can do an online practice TOEFL to see where you are at. I wish you well in pursuing your dream of becoming an engineer. :)
Thank you comment icon First word, I want to thank you for your advice for my question. That is those are the things that I know you're showing me how to do the best that I am grateful for and learn about. for me new ways in the future and make for my motivation to succeed in the future. Thank you so much. # success nhan

Patricia’s Answer

Hi Nhan,

I really just want to say congratulations on being here, and working so hard to achieve your goals! It's very impressive. Your drive and attitude are key in helping you get there. The sky is the limit for someone who works hard and figures out how to overcome obstacles. I agree with the other answers posted about continuing to immerse yourself in reading, writing and speaking English. I work for a very diverse company and work every day with people for who English is a second language. When it's time to seek out employment, look for an employer who embraces a diverse culture. It will likely be a positive experience for you.

Good luck!
Thank you comment icon First word I would like thank you for your advice to what you think is congratulations to me on being here. Thank you very much for advice to me understand and for me experience to know a little about that.
