What would you recommend doing if I'm not 100% sure on going forth and per suing a carrier in accounting... What helped you decide on actually pursuing this carrier field?

Hello, I'm a senior in High School, trying to figure out if I'm actually interested in accounting, but I need a push for something to actually do to find if I'm interested in this carrier. #financial-accounting

Hi Leonela,

First of all, great advice from Dawn!

In addition, I might recommend, when you are on-campus for college tours, that you ask to speak with current accounting majors or even to sit in on an accounting class...in order to gather some additional perspective on what it is like.

Perhaps you could even see if there is an alumni from your high school (or a friend of one of your teacher's) who is currently working as an accountant...I'm sure they'd be happy to speak with you about the accounting profession.

Lastly, Dawn's final point is spot on...I wouldn't get too worried about finalizing your major during your freshman year...try out a number of subjects and see what interests you. In the long wrong, you'll be most successful if you're spending your time learning a subject and working in a field that excites and interests you.

Hope that helps!

Geoff

Most business programs include an accounting 101 or 201 course as part of the preliminary classes. I would start by taking that course and seeing if you enjoy the material. You could also seek out summer intern programs with accounting firms to get an introduction into the industry.

I personally chose to do accounting, because I knew it was a respected program. Although I did decide to pursue my CPA & went into public accounting for a short time, should you choose another path in the business world, the degree will still carry weight & provide you with a starting place in understanding the financials of companies.

Side note, don't feel pressured to pick a degree your freshman year - you have time!

Hi Leonela,
It is wonderful that you are considering a degree in Accounting. I totally agree with the advice that Dawn and Geoff gave you. I would advise you taking some accounting course to see if you truly like it. Trust me, after a course or two you will know if accounting is for you.

During your freshman year do not be surprise if you change your career once or twice. Take advantage of this time to ensure you pick a career that you have a passion for.

Internships are great ways to find out if your are interested in a particular career and many accounting firms both large and small offer winter and/or summer internships, so it would be a great idea to take a look at their websites and contact recruiters to get more information.

One thing that helped me decide on a career in accounting was a club at my university called the Accounting Association, I believe most colleges will have a similar accounting/business club. Many activities put on by this club brought in accounting professionals to speak to students and held various career fairs so that students could network with different accounting firms. This was a great way to find out more about the career path and I would encourage you to seek out and join a similar group if available.
