Is a Music Education degree necessary if you think you will be teaching outside of public schools?

I am majoring in harp performance, and hoping/planning to graduate in 3 years. I am interested in teaching, but don’t think I will be teaching music in public schools. Are there other reasons I should consider a music education degree, or would it really not be right for me or my graduation plan? #teaching #teacher #music #music-performance

Brett’s Answer

The contacts and peripheral skills you'll connect to via Music Universities may be valuable in offering cross-pollinating education to your students (whether teaching in school or outside) and it may be worth the investment of time. Also, in a world of dabblers, the credential and mastery that will be assisted by your education may be worth its weight in gold.

I would imagine there would be more job opportunities with an education degree if than a harp performance degree. HOWEVER, if you're not going to be teaching in a public school then it's not necessary to have a degree in education. If you don't need a degree at all, that will save so much money. BUT if a degree is necessary, make sure you get the degree that's most worth your time and money post graduation.
