Pramuditha’s Answer

This question brings me back to my first rotation of OB/GYN in medical school. I was with my assigned mother throughout the course of labor, supported her both medically and emotionally and the reward you get when you see the new-born baby for the first time and feeling that you truly helped to make a whole family happy is incomparable!

Pramuditha recommends the following next steps:

Anyone who loves to go for a carrier in OB/ GYN would benefit by shadowing a professional in a OB/ GYN practice for few days o get a real feel of it and to explore how you will find it interesting.

Dara’s Answer

I'm not an OB, but I am a prenatal genetic counselor. We deal with assessing and explaining risk for babies to have genetic conditions. I enjoy helping people understand everything that is going on, their options, and the risks, so they are empowered to make an informed decision. Even though we deal with some very tough stuff, people usually leave feeling better than they came in, because they have gained understanding.

If you decide to become an OB, I would recommend every OB consult with a genetic counselor once to discuss good ways to communicate abnormal genetic test results with their patient ahead of referring them to a genetic counselor.

Dara recommends the following next steps:

Try shadowing a pregnancy care provider. If you have trouble finding an OB, MFM, or perinatologist, try reaching out to other types of staff like sonographer and genetic counselors (especially at private practices, they usually have less bureaucracy surrounding student shadowing.
Do research into the different parts of the pregnancy care team. I thought I wanted to be an OB/GYN, but I fell in love with genetic counseling.
