Hello Leslie,

With so many colleges in the United States and even the world, the task of figuring out which one you want to go to is overwhelming!

There are so many colleges, and they are all unique in their own way. It is best to figure out what you prefer by thinking about some of these overall characteristics for your potential college:
-University vs. College
-Graduation Rates
-Employment Rates after students graduate
-Social Environment such as Greek Life, Sports, Academic Clubs, Etc.
-Cost of the school and financial aid
-Prestige of the school and branding
-Focus and specializations of the school and what you want to major in
-Public or private school
-Size (large, medium, small)
-Location (city, suburb, town)

In addition, there are some other proactive things you can do such as going to college fairs and speaking to representatives to get a better understanding of the school requirements, atmosphere, etc. You can also go on college visits and see first hand what it would be like if you attended that school. You will gain lots of insights by actually walking on campus, hearing from students and professors, seeing dorm/college life, going to classes, etc. Furthermore, you can talk to current students and especially freshmen to see how many return to the school for their sophomore year. You can also look on Rate My Professor to see how the professors rank at the schools. You should aim to apply to 3 target schools, 2 reach schools, and 2 safety schools.

In the end, you need to examine what interests and motivates you the most. Eventually, you will find a school that suits you, but no school is perfect. It will be up to you to do well in class and commit to the experience. I wish you much luck in your decision and embarking on this next stage in your life! college college-selection advice
