As a student athlete going into engineering do I have an advantage over other applicants when it comes to a career/post college job?

I'm a girl who is going to play soccer in college and major in engineering, probably mechanical! #engineer #sports

Lou’s Answer

The edge you may is a mental one. As you know playing a sport like soccer requires split second decision s and knowing your opponent. It's knowing that even when the chips are down, its not over till its over. I would recommend a reading a book by Tony LaRussa called One Last Strike. Yes, it is a baseball book but the lessons gleaned from it will help you develop that mental edge even more.

Candace’s Answer

The skills you learn while playing sports will help you tons in your career. There have been numerous studies that show a majority of women who are in senior level positions played sports when they were younger. Being a student athlete teaches you about grit, leadership, time management and teamwork. It also shows that you have outside interests and hobbies away from just school. If you are able to balance your engineering degree with being a student athlete you will be a super desirable candidate!
