Katrina’s Answer

Any abnormality or poor prognosis is explained per the physician to the parents. However, the entire medical staff (doctors, nurses, respiratory therapist, occupation/speech therapist, specialist, etc) definitely works as a team. The most important thing as a (NICU, Pediatric) registered nurse in these type of situations is to be very compassionate & supportive. Also, educating the parents as much as possible is very important.

Nurses are part of the medical team. If a child is born with an abnormality.
The physicians and nursing staff work together to tell the parent(s).
What is important, is that difficult news should be delivered in person with the parent(s) present
while the parent is holding the infant/child. This is essential.
