Shelly’s Answer

Hi Jessica,

Sorry to hear about your conflict. That is a hard situation and I don't think there is "one right answer" since it might depend on your comfort level, interactions with the individual, and the nature of the conflict.

1) If possible, I would first see if you can kindly address your concerns one-on-one with your co-worker if you feel it's safe. Sometimes it can be a simple misunderstanding.
2) If you don't feel comfortable talking to them one-on-one, you could ask an advocate such as your boss or co-worker to be present and/or mediate the conversation and issues you both are experiencing.
3) If you are experiencing severe conflicts that cannot be resolved and/or unethical situations, consider voicing your concerns to your boss, their boss, and/or HR.

I recommend that you document all communications and efforts in case you will need this later.

Best of luck,
Shelly

Blake’s Answer

Ask questions, listen, and try to understand. There are two stories to every story. You can't control how they react, but you can always control treating them with respect, regardless if you disagree.

Sydney’s Answer

If you're having any conflict with your coworker, you could speak with your manager about the situation. Or, depending on the situation, talk with your coworker maturely and put aside any issues you may have with them.

Darin’s Answer

Just take it one step at a time. Remain calm and simply ask them to explain why they feel the way they do towards you. Most of the time it's just a simple misunderstanding, and most won't expect that question to be asked. If you still have conflict afterwards or they are just blowing you off then get a lead or manager involved to see if they can try and resolve the issue for you. But like I said in the beginning remain calm and simply ask the other person what's up

Abby’s Answer

While conflicts will vary in level of severity, I would say first and foremost, remain calm and try to talk with the co worker. If you do not feel safe or comfortable doing so, or if your conversation does not resolve the conflict, talk with your manager or a trusted co worker about the conflict with a mindset of resolving the conflict in the most effective way. Be sure remain professional if you are able to. Some conflicts require compromise to be resolved. Remember: it's okay to be in the wrong and it's important to be able to admit that.

Most importantly, try to address the conflict early on, if possible. While some conflicts might just be a simple misunderstanding, some can be more serious, so I encourage you do your best to speak up if you feel comfortable. The sooner the conflict is addressed, the sooner it can be resolved.

I hope this helps!

Devin’s Answer

Conflict in the workplace in inevitable. Just like being on a team or dealing with your family, people will clash over big and little things. What ultimately matters is how you handle it and attempt to resolve the situation. If you find yourself disagreeing with a coworker or anybody really, you should never just sit and stew with your feelings. I'd encourage you to calmly and clearly let them know the issue you have with their behavior or line of thinking and try to hash out the rest. You should never assume somebody knows how you are feeling because it is likely that they either weren't aware you had taken issue with them or they may also see themself as the wronged party. If the worst case scenario plays out and the problem is still unresolved, bring in a third party or raise the issue to your superiors. Best of luck.
