With so many beauty school options out there, it might seem a little overwhelming to choose just one! Before you get started, we compiled a list of tips to help you along the way. Every school and every student is a little different – we want to make sure you find the best beauty school for you.

1. DECIDE ON A PROGRAM
Which part of the beauty industry appeals to you most? Do you love cutting or coloring hair? Do you have a passion for skincare? Or maybe your manicure is always amazing. The right beauty school for you should have a program that suits you – cosmetology, esthiology, barbering or nail technician. Make sure the program you’ve chosen will help you get the career you want.

2. PRIORITIZE A CHECKLIST
What’s important to you when it comes to school? Would you rather be in a program that teaches you all the skills you want or do you prefer that the school be more affordable? Do you want a school that focuses on job placement or one that has a busy clinic floor? The best school for you should check off as many boxes on your list as possible, but if it came down to choosing one item over another, where do your needs rank?

3. TOUR THE CAMPUS
You really can’t choose the best beauty school for you unless you tour the campus. Checking out the website is a great first start, but you’ll see and learn so much more when you meet with Admissions in person. By touring the school, you’ll learn what the commute will be like, how accessible parking is, how clean the classrooms are and how busy the clinic floor is.

4. ASK QUESTIONS
When you’re on your tour, ask questions! An Admissions representative will be able to answer your questions about class size, program length, morale, clinic floor activity and more. Come prepared with a list of questions so you remember to ask everything that is important to you. Here are just a few questions to get your started:
– Is your school accredited?
– How long is the program?
– What kind of skills will I learn in this program?
– What are your job placement rates?
– What kind of financial aid do you offer?

5. LEARN ABOUT FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS
You should definitely ask about financial aid and scholarships. Tuition cost is sometimes the deciding factor for choosing a school, and you should be aware of all your financial options before picking your school. You may need to sit down with Financial Services to see what kind of loans and grants you are eligible for. Your school may also offer scholarships or provide you with a list of scholarships you can apply for.

6. CHOOSE AN ENROLLMENT DATE
Most beauty schools have on going enrollment, so there should be multiple start dates to choose from. Is there a time of year that works best for you? If you’re ready to start your career now, does the beauty school have classes starting soon? Or do you need a few months to set a schedule or finish high school? The perfect school will work with you to find the ideal start date. Each start date comes with different pros and cons. For example, in July you might have to start school before your friends, but you’ll have the skill set you need by the time the holidays come – a very busy time on the clinic floor. Everyone wants their hair to be perfect before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

7. CHOOSE CLASSES THAT WORK WITH YOUR SCHEDULE
Depending on your home and work life, you may choose a school based on your schedule. First, talk to your work and your family so they understand your new set of responsibilities. Find out if your job will let you shift your hours to accommodate a new school schedule. Once you know what your home schedule is, you can figure out if you can take full-time or part-time classes. Can you attend class during the day or will you need to attend night classes? Your education is key, so try to work around your school schedule more than anything.

8. EXPERIENCE THE ATMOSPHERE AND MORALE
When you tour the school, get a feel for the atmosphere. When choosing a school, you’ll want one that matches your personality. Do the students seem happy? Are they getting a good education? The morale of the campus will effect how much you enjoy your time at the school, which could be up to a year long.

9. LEARN ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Your teachers will be the ones guiding you towards your new career. It’s important to know what they are like. If you can, find out what experience they have and how long they have been teaching. You’ll also want to know what the instructor-student ratio is. Will you get one on one time with your instructors or are students expected to learn in a large group setting? You’ll want to choose a school with a teaching style that suits you.

10. LEARN ABOUT THE SCHOOL’S REPUTATION
Lastly, ask the community what they’ve heard about the schools you are looking at. Your friends and family may have gotten their hair done there, or maybe you know a stylist who graduated from that school. What do people say and think when they hear about the beauty school you’re researching? Does the cosmetology school help the community in any way? Do they volunteer or strive to make their city a better place? Reputation is important because it will shape the way potential employers and guests look at you. You want to go to a school that’s in good standing with the community.

Just like any schooling, this is going to vary widely. In the US, most accredited schools begin with a portion of hands on training as well as theoretical (book) learning. After a few weeks or a set amount of hours training, often you will begin practicing those techniques in clients hands on.

The two major book manufacturers in the US are: Milady and Pivot Point. You can check those out to see more about curriculum for each subject.
