Gemma’s Answer

Dear Karoline,

Some of the best medical schools include Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, UC San Francisco (UCSF) , UC Los Angeles (UCLA), Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and, John Hopkins University. There are other medical schools out there, but these are the most known. My best advice is to do your research on each school, and on any other school you found. Find out the admission requirements for each school, financial aid, campus environment, degree programs, etc. and choose which are your possible options that you would like to apply to.

Another thing you can do is reach out and network with anyone you know in the medical field to get an idea of where they studied and how they liked the program. I hope this helps. Best of luck on your research!

RAVI’s Answer

I probably should not be answering this as I am in Technology.

However I decided to share my experience as a father of a girl starting Medical school next year! My younger daughter is in a 7 year medical program - 3 year undergrad and 4 year Medicine. She got the admissions straight out of high school.

My daughter, just like you, is very focused on becoming a doctor and wanted to apply to good medical schools 2 years ago. She wanted to apply to for 7 year and 8 year medical programs that guarantee medical seat admission right from high school. As a backup plan she also applied to several schools for bachelors in science at several schools that also had great medical schools.

I will just list the names. She created this list on her own with help from her school guidance councilor and several tools/web sites on internet. I hear they are good schools from other friends whose kids are in these schools as well. I personally do not have much more details.
Case Western, University of Chicago, Cornell, Emory, StonyBrook, UPENN, NJMS, University of Sciences Philadelphia, Stanford.

Some of them offer 7 year medical program and some offer 8 year medical program (3 or 4 year undergra and 4 year medical). Some guarantee medical seat right from the beginning. But some still require you to go through MCAT exam and general medical admission program. But people feel these programs carry higher success rate of getting into med school after undergrad, compared to general pool. I do not have much more details than what I heard in openhouses with my daughter and other internet sources.

My daughter did get several admissions, and two with full scholarship, and one with "Presidential Scholarship" with Zero cost!. However at the end she chose a 7 year program, with no scholarship, becuase it guaranteed medical seat from day one. She has to maintain 3.5 GPA during the 3 years of undergad! This guarantee was more important to her in her decision to chose the college than "Zero Cost"!! College ranking did not play a role at all.

Additionally, I have heard personally from some recent graduate doctors that does not matter which medical school you graduate from. Very few people pay attention to it. It is more important to get the right residency program at the right hospital.

I am not sure if all of this helps you. I have no way to substantiate any of this with data. I am just explaining my journey as a father. Hope doctors on this program provide more details and valuable insights into this.

Just be flexible. Enjoy the opportunities. Stay focused. Work hard. Success will come along!
