MARKET RESEARCH ANALYST

Idalla as a market research analyst, you'll study competitors and client's needs and wants in order to advise a company on which decisions would be most profitable. These analysts usually hold a bachelor's degree, but often opt for more advanced degrees and professional certifications.

JOB DESCRIPTION – Market research analysts help companies and organizations understand their competitors' activities and their customers' wants and needs. Market research analysis requires strong skills in communication and data analysis. Those interested in this career should be prepared to gather information and present it to clients. Determining which goods and services are in demand and the best rate or price to charge for these products is a core function of a market research analyst's job, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Market research analysts are also typically responsible for presenting survey findings to their clients. This includes translating complex numerical survey results into a package that is easy to understand. Graphs and text translations of the findings are commonly used to help clients understand survey results. In addition to taking surveys, market research analysts can be responsible for keeping track of client industry trends and general marketing trends. The BLS indicates that surveys are a big part of determining what customers want and that market research analysts work to develop and oversee the distribution and completion of these surveys.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS – Bachelor's degrees are the standard educational credential for market research analysts. Master's degrees may be necessary for some jobs in the field. The BLS recommends that aspiring market research analysts take classes in business, marketing, social sciences, math, economics, computer science and statistics. An internship with a market research firm can be a good way for students to gain some professional experience in the field. Working as a survey taker may be another good way for students to gain experience. Being detail-oriented and having good quantitative abilities are important skills for market research analysts to have.

CAREER OUT LOOK AND SALARY
Between 2018 and 2028, the BLS projects a much faster than average forecast for job opportunities in the market research analyst field, with 20 percent employment growth expected. The increase in jobs will be driven by organizations' growing desire for data and market research to better evaluate the effectiveness of business and marketing plans. The average Market Research Analyst III salary in the United States is $89,900 as of July 27, 2020, but the range typically falls between $81,000 and $103,000. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in your profession.

As a market researcher, you'll need good communication and data analysis skills, along with a bachelor's degree. Professional certification requires passing an exam, and the BLS says it is a good step towards career advancement. Tremendous growth is anticipated in the marketing research analysis field through 2028.

Hi Idalla,

I have similar questions as John. Knowing your education and employment background will help us provide more relevant answers. If you wouldn't mind sharing more information, we'd be happy to help!

To broadly answer your question without this information - Have you ever taken a personality test that provides suggested career paths? For example, the Myers-Briggs Type Instrument can assist in narrowing your career choices based on your personality traits. You may read more information about it online here: https://www.myersbriggs.org/type-use-for-everyday-life/personality-and-careers/. The official Myers-Briggs test requires a fee, though there are many free online version not sponsored by Myers-Briggs available.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Alycia’s Answer

Hey Idalla!
The soft skills you just mentioned (fast, reliable, past work experience) can be useful in pretty much any job career. Do you have a specific interest in an academic subject that you could see yourself applying in real life? I highly suggest taking a personality quiz (Myers-Briggs type indicator) to pinpoint exactly who you are and start from there. Are you an introvert who likes solitude? If so, try looking into jobs that involve working solo, like a freelance writer or a Youtube influencer. There are so many career paths you could take and if you want to enjoy what you do, you first have to figure out what you like/who you like to do it with. In my case, my favorite subject in high school was Human Anatomy and Physiology; I also love working and being around women, therefore, I am pursuing a career as a physician assistant who plans on specializing in Women's Health (OBGYN, Mother Baby, Pediatrics).
Good luck!

Why not try a career in computer science? It is easy to get started in online courses learning how to code. This will give you an indication whether or not this is a good choice for you
