What fields of study and careers will we see start to disappear if technology continues to advance?

Many people in older generations have seen their careers and areas of expertise become insignificant through better technology. I am curious about other fields we may see disappear. #technology

This is a very timely question given that the current AI systems are so good at some human tasks. In many transformations like the one we are going through now, the nature of the jobs and skills need to do them change as do the job titles, so the one thing that you should remember is that while may jobs will be handled by AI many other will open up where humans will be needed.
Some functions that AI will impact the number of jobs available to humans are service jobs like call center agents, customer service jobs at various companies, human resources and hiring, administrative jobs, many lower level jobs in finance, software development (programmers) and in the vehicle drivers and such jobs as well.

That is up for debate, but low level skilled jobs hat can be automated will likely be the first to go.

Check out this video on YouTube, Humans Need Not Apply. Be forewarned, it is very cynical so take it with a grain of salt.

Also, Andrew McAfee at MIT studies this and has written "The Second Machine Age" (great book) and has given several short TED talks. Here are some links to them:

Hi Lindsay! Great question. Just from my own experience and observations, anything in the service industry that is low skilled labor or doesn't require thinking will start to disappear. In the United States for example, there is a big push to raise the minimum wage. Many politicians feel that if a person gives an honest 40 hours of work, they should have a livable wage. While that is noble, the purpose of a business is to make a profit and if legislation like that is successful, you will see a lot of service jobs eliminated and replaced by technology. At fast food establishments like McDonald's, they've already started trialing order placement with tablets instead of people. Most grocery stores also offer self-checkout options. As our society gets more comfortable with technology, a lot of jobs that involve human interaction with the intent of obtaining information will be eliminated and replaced with systems and processes that can take the place of humans. Technology allows organizations to cut costs. It's necessary to be able to understand how technology works and be a driver of it in order to survive.
