Julian, in order to become an orthodontist, one must first complete a bachelor’s degree (which is usually 4 years long). Then, they have to go through 4 years of dental school. Following that, you have to a residency program which is 2-3 years long.

So , generally speaking, you are looking around 10 years after high school to become an orthodontist.
