Rachel’s Answer

Hi Zach! There are numerous complementary minors for accounting. However, I think minors in college are an excellent opportunity to learn about other interests besides business. You never know if/how your interests will bleed into your career. For example, I minored in Spanish, not just for the language aspect, but because I am interested in Latin American and Spanish cultures. Turns out, my knowledge of Spanish got me onto a new client. I don't think you can go wrong with any minor on your resume, just have it be something you want to do, and allow it to be a break from studying accounting :) Good luck!

Information Technology should give you some additional skills. Automation, software and systems will become more and more important. If there is a subject that you love that may dovetail with an industry you want to pursue (or not), choose that. Be interested...Be interesting.

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Zach! I think if you minor in anything in your business school it could be a good compliment to your accounting major. I minored in both business analytics and information systems. My business analytics minor really helps me understand large datasets and to utilize data to formulate an opinion. My information system minor really helps me understand computer systems. I think that an information systems minor is more helpful given that the accounting profession is so influenced by the use of technology, but if that is something you aren't interested in, I wouldn't minor in it. I would minor in something that you are interested in and whether that is something in business or not, I would go for it because this is the time of your life where you can learn basically about anything you want and you have plenty of classes at your disposal to do it!

Rose’s Answer

I minored in Economics because it required the fewest additional classes. That was not a good reason, looking back.

If you are interested in a specific industry, minor in something related to that. For instance, if you want to work with sports, you can minor in kinesiology. If you don't have anything specific in mind, good minors for business are psychology, communications, and foreign languages (Spanish, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.)

An alternate approach is to just minor in something unrelated that you are passionate about. College is really the last time most people get to learn for the sake of learning, so you may as well enjoy it. Who knows what arcane knowledge could come in handy later on?
