[closed] What type of software programs are applied by management professionals?

Hello,

I am an undergraduate business major, and I am entering my senior year at college. I am interested in pursuing a business related career, hopefully in management or data analysis. Just about everyone who is a business major knows the basics of using the microsoft office suite such as excel, word, and powerpoint. However, what functions and features do everyday managers use from these programs? Are there any other software programs that get used across the board?

Thank you for your time. #computer-software #business-administration #business-management #program-manager

This is a very good question. the answer to this really depends on the type of managerial position one may have. For me for example, as a software development manager, I use spreadsheets, word processor, presentation applications very often. Then there are other tools I use that are specifically for development in which have been created internally. However, it depends on the information that would be useful to the manager for their team. For example, perhaps it's important to track the team's development velocity in certain development mythologies. This can be done even with a spreadsheet.

Far and away, seek to excel at Excel! It is a good tool for general business analysis. You will want to be able to create charts and pivot tables to visualize your data. On a daily basis, you should be able to perform quick sorts and generate totals -- perhaps in identifying dollars in a division of sales, or perhaps hours worked on a project.

Other software will differ based on your area of emphasis. You will most likely encounter Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software; the popular brand there is Salesforce.com. They offer an additional package: Wave Analytics.

If you haven't already, familiarize yourself with SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) - it will handle complex business intelligence queries. Oracle is another important vendor in the analytics space.

With the data you generate, you will need to be able to identify, for example, who your customers are -- and what they expect from you; you'll decide where dollars need to be allocated; be able to pinpoint weaknesses (what portion of population isn't using your product).

Lots to be explored....enjoy!
