I want to know about make-up artists. Why did they want to do this job and what made them do it?

Hello! I'm Ms. Tingle at the International Community School. My 5th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks so much!

Ashlee’s Answer

I have several MUA friends as well who love their jobs! They love the flexibility of setting their own schedule. They love being able to express their creativity and build a unique brand with their clientele. Some MUA become really well known for their work and get to travel to work on celebrities, special events and/or weddings! There are always new brands and products coming out in this industry, which also means the ability to continue learning.

Andrea’s Answer

I have a few makeup artist friends and they are creative and passionate about makeup and creating various looks. The jobs vary from: face painting artist, makeup artist at stores like Sephora, hair and makeup professional at salons (bridal/wedding is a big segment) and makeup artists on TV/Movie sets. They all enjoy and get satisfaction from playing with a wide range of products/tools to create new looks.

Alexandra’s Answer

I started my career as a MUA. When I first studied to become one, it was because I was an actress and I wanted another source of income that has flexible hours (so I could make auditions and rehearsals), I was tired of working the late hours of hospitality and I wanted to do something that let me express my creativity too. Early on I was luck that because I was an actress a lot of friend would ask me to do their makeup for headshots, photoshoots, film shoots, weddings, red carpet events, fashion, editorial work and eventually I was contacted by a major Cosmetic brand looking for a MUA to travel around the company representing them doing events and training other MUAs. I knew that doing this would end my acting career but I also knew that it was going to be a huge source of creativity with much more economic stability. I took the job and entered the cosmetic Corporate world and have never looked back. Almost 2 decades later I love what I do, I love helping people, developing talent and releasing cosmetic products I love and am proud to represent. I hope this helps. Sometimes the journey is not a straight line.
