How do I know If I'm on the right career path?

I have an interest in a few things; fashion, advertising, and other miscellaneous subjects. I have figured out what I want to do in the future (fashion merchandiser) but the problem is that I always have this little doubt in the back of my mind. This doubt pesters me and produces insecure questions about my future; what if you aren't good at what you want to do? What if I can't become successful in the topic I am most interested in? So how can I become confident in my choices, what leads us to be successful in what we want to achieve? #career #jobs #work-life

Hi Tiffanie! The great thing about paths or roads is usually they have forks, left or right turn options and even rest stops. So I say head out, enjoy the trip and as you go you'll know when to stop for bathroom breaks, slow down to rest, sleep, eat or to enjoy a scenic spot. If you get lost there are internet websites, links and info sites, GPS's and maps to get you back on track.
Remember its a journey not a destination. Even U turns or changing direction are permissible on your trip. AAA is available or other resources are as you head into the unknown. Everything you need is just beyond your sight, just around the corner waiting to be discovered. Make The Impossible Possible by William Strickland is a about someone else's journey as is Pour Your Heart Into It by Howard Schultz CEO of Starbucks. Each of them had their contrast, pain and tremendous obstacles blocking their paths. You might want to get acquainted with them before you pack your bags for your own trip. "Happy trails" Paul

Surekha’s Answer

Hi Tiffanie,

I didn't know what I wanted to do until I started working (after college). It's hard to know what you like/ what you don't like until you start getting some work experience. I majored in Psychology in college in order to keep things flexible. If you aren't fully sure, you may want to keep your major a little more flexible so that you have more options. Or maybe do a major in Fashion but a Minor (or Double Major) in something else that's more versatile.

All the best no matter what you decide. It's an exciting time!

Unfortunately, you can't know for sure. However, you can try to look at the signs. You are already trying to figure it out already which is good. Let me tell you one more thing about fashion; job openings growth rate is very minimal. In other wards, there is a big chance you won't find a job when you graduate. Try to go back to square one and take a couple of career tests. After you research the results of these test, let us talk again.
