Software development and software engineering are interrelated terms, but they don't mean quite the same thing. A software engineer is engaged in software development; not all software developers, however, are engineers. Software engineering means applying engineering principles to software creation.

Hi Justin,

I personally feel these two roles overlap a lot for nowadays industry.

If you really want to tell them apart, I'd say a software developer 'implements', she focus more on building things from the ground up. While a software engineer 'architects', she not only build things but also cares about the bigger environment, on how to design a system where all the parts work well with each other.
