Majors associated with Forensic Biology

Hello, My name is Nasurae and I am a senior at Achievement First Amistad High School. I am interested in either becoming a forensic biologist, but most schools do not offer any majors that is directly related to this career. Are there any majors or classes I can take that will connect me to this career? #forensics #crime #criminal-investigations

Hi Nasurae,

Most forensic biologists graduate from a 4-year college with a degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or forensic biology. You will need extensive laboratory experience and should take courses in genetics, biostatistics, and general and organic chemistry.

To pursue a career in this field, make sure you are taking as many science classes as you can while you're still in high school and make sure you are knowledgeable in physics and math. It is also important that you participate in science fairs and/or conduct some experiments that involve biological examination and identification.

Once you have chosen a college to attend, you will want to major in biology or forensic biology (if available) with heavy coursework in chemistry, physics and mathematics. You may also want to take electives in criminal justice, law enforcement and crime scene processing but not at the expense of science courses. Internships involving field work and investigation will also be useful as you will gain valuable knowledge and be able to gather first hand experience in the field that you're interested in.

Hope this helps!! Good Luck in all your future endeavors!
