Daniel’s Answer

Hello,

A lot of GMs of professional sports teams in North America have backgrounds in the field of law. Obviously having managerial experience of managing a team, and having a keen eye on scouting talent is a benefit, but in terms of educational background, given contracts and negotiations are a huge part of being a GM, having this type of skill-set and experience is crucial for successful GMs.

Cheers, and best of luck with your studies!

Keith’s Answer

I agree with the first response that you will have to understand and provide guidance regarding the law and a law degree is preferred. However, I would not underestimate the need to have a strong background in the business world, either through experience or schooling. You will have to not only understand the law, which you could receive legal guidance, but truly understanding business and the art of negotiation is imperative to the success of a GM. I wish you well in this high aspiration.
