Is it better to go straight into working, whether it is a full-time career or part-time job, or really take time to find yourself after college?

I am a high school student currently in my junior year. I was wondering what the benefits of obtaining a job right after college would be and how it would compare to taking a break to try to find what you want to do with the rest of your life. #college #career #career-choice #job #after-college

Hi Karen!

Wow it sounds like maybe you have some fantastic options. If you don't have to start working immediately (i.e. to cover student loans like many of your peers) then I don't see why you shouldn't take some time and do something special. Perhaps travel to Europe, or take a road trip in the US, or if you are so inclined go on a mission to Haiti, or go build a house with Habitat for Humanity. There are a lot of good ways to decompress after college if you so desire. Adventures are never wasted because they make you grow.

Of course, if that dream job just happens to fall in your lap or if some interesting opportunity knocks - well jump on it! Life is what happens while you were making other plans.

I wish you all the best.

Kim’s Answer

Hi Karen

By now you're probably on track to either go to college or pursue another path. The advice you've been given already is very insightful. My only other thought is to keep the mindset of continuing to explore your options just like you did in your junior year. There really is no wrong choice as long as your current path continues to challenge you and inspire you to grow. And often the road less traveled is a very interesting one (and can be exciting, too). And whatever you decide to do, enjoy the journey. It will be more memorable for you.

Kim recommends the following next steps:

Explore what true strengths you have. Recommend StrengthsFinder assessment and report.
Explore areas of interest and what career paths intersect.
Continue to explore adjacent opportunities to expand your experience.
