What are some extracurricular activities I can do if I want to be a doctor and I live in the Philippines?

I'm a high school student. I want to be a doctor and I want extracurricular activities related to that. Currently, my extracurricular activities are all related to writing. I want to change that. Where I live, there aren't many opportunities. I'm open to volunteering online, joining research groups and the like. What can I do to add to my extracurricular activities? And where can I do these? Preferably in the Philippines and in Cagayan de Oro.

Hi Mia,

I can recommend to join an organization and contribute your expertise. You can share your knowledge and skills to other people. Also, you can explore the beauty of the islands by joining those medical volunteer teams for a medical mission.

Wishing you all the best and Good luck.

Serena’s Answer

Hi Mia,
There are various ways in achieving volunteering experience that will contribute to your application to medical school,
Other than work directly in the hospital and directly with doctors,
It is important to grasp experiences that show you work well with people in general.
Good communication skills is essential as you are expected to communicate greatly with your future patients.

I would suggest you to look for volunteering opportunities related to working with children,
Be it tutoring or mentoring - there should be plenty of these opportunities offered virtually too,
So you won’t need to worry on how to travel there.

Write to universities medical department and take initiative to show that you would like to contribute to their research.
If not available, look for medical surveys to take part in and show that you are involved and interested in the medical industry and trying to contribute in all ways possible.

Good luck!

Regards,
Serena

Hi Moira

I would recommend to get in touch with local clinics / poly clinics / hospitals / medical student campuses and opt for volunteering activities particularly in your field of specialisation if you are able to find it otherwise be open to General Practitioner activities like medical workshops / presentations etc

And try to read medical journals in your free time. following are some study sources

https://www.medscape.com/internalmedicine/journals
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama
https://www.nejm.org/medical-articles/research

Hope this helps

All the best !!

Kind Regards
