I would love some advice on Pharmacy & Nursing school. Can someone please provide me some?

I have finished my secondary school and about to gain admission this month into University at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. I entered for Pharmacy as first choice and i am rest assured i will be admitted this year based on my performance in JAMB and WAEC results. I am now having a second taught to end up being a Nurse. I want advice if i can study Pharmacy one year (lose that year) and switch over to nursing OR if i am to complete my first degree in Pharmacy and take on nursing as Masters Degree. Is it possible to take on nursing as second degree? I am still young (16 years this year) so i am not in a haste. Please i need your kind advice. #registered-nurses #pharmaceuticals

I would first decide if you want to be a clinical pharmacist working in a hospital, retail pharmacist working in a drug store, or develop and manufacture pharmaceutical products. You can do all three with a pharmacy degree. If you aren’t sure yet, that’s ok, just find a well rounded program. I went to University of Maryland for my doctorate. They have a good Pharm D program and nice faculty. You may consider that school. I do not know about nursing schools, but do know that it is a valuable skill. Nurses can work in hospitals, homes, or even work in clinical trial management for pharma companies.

Pharmacy and Nursing aren't mutually exclusive; and no, you don't have to complete the degree in one before switching over to the other if you feel that's the way to go. A couple of my former Pharmacy school classmates did just that (one actually went to Med school after their 1st Pharmacy year). Since you say you still have time to decide, however, I would suggest that you work - or volunteer - in both types of settings and observe the way these professions are practiced before making up your mind. Best way to figure out what you really want is to take an inside look.
