Thank you comment icon Hi Samantha! Could you give the student some more detail about this? What is the first step to bootcamp/training, and what can the student expect during this phase? Alexandra Carpenter, Admin

Thomas’s Answer

You will first complete basic training (bootcamp). Then, you will have to undergo additional training based on your specialty. After you complete your training, you will join your first unit and start working in your new role.

Chandler’s Answer

Adrian,

The first thing you will do in any military branch is training. Your instructor will teach you how to physically and mentally push yourself to improve your stamina, strength, and mental toughness. Then you will learn how to work with a team. This starts with sharing resources and grows to maneuvering in sync with your peers. In the Army it is imperative that you work as a team. At first you will learn how to work with a small team. You will then be challenged in your specialty using your new physical strength, mental toughness, and teamwork. In your specific case it looks like you will be training in marine biology. Your specialty training will go on for months as you become an expert in your specific job if enlisted. Your training will go on for years if you are becoming an officer. Training in the military is very hands on and that makes it fun and interesting!

Chandler recommends the following next steps:

Ask your recruiter to speak with a recruiter assistant to hear about their recent experience joining the Army.
Use that knowledge to get a jump start on your physical and mental training before your first assignment.
