How do I accomplish everything I want to do and still have time for family?

I am a high school senior and I am very family oriented. I want to push myself to reach the highest point I can regarding my work. I am planning on becoming a chemical engineer and moving up the latter; the only thing I need to have is the knowledge on how to make time for my family every night. #engineer

Thank you comment icon It's all about time management. Yes, you will be busy once you're in school, but your family will also have to understand that your education comes first. Don't push them away or always say you're too busy - due to studying, but set aside a couple hours a week to just hang out with your family. You could even just have dinner with them every night or facetime them, if you're planning to go away for college. It's all up to you and how you manage your time to be able to fit in school, school work, and family time. Manorone

One of the challenges of working and having a family is balance.

There are times that family needs come first.

There are times that work needs come first.

The two have to work together (maybe not in harmony ... but still be in motion at the same time.)

Some options are to work for yourself. You could possibly work in the industry, become a consultant, then set your own hours/rules.

On the other hand, pick a company that does allow for family leave.

Some jobs requires 24x7 support - that takes a toll.

The goal would be to seriously pose these questions during an interview. If the hiring person states that this is a 24x7 operations kind of shop, then you may not want to opt for that. if the position is a 9 to 5 spot where no one works after 5PM, that could be a better option.
