Hi Parker, it really depends on what you mean by "computer scientist". If you're thinking in terms of "software developer", then it's "an applied career". Software Developers are skilled in computer science principles, and use them to develop software solutions to complex and challenging problems, like power plant control, banking and finance, trajectory and navigation, robotics, media, commerce and education, to name a few! Then, there are computer scientists who specialize in research and developments in the field. These folks may be investigating completely new computational processors and systems, methods for computer communications, or artificial intelligence and machine learning. Finally, there are computer scientists who teach in academia and at large, helping students and other computer professionals to "level up" on technologies, processes, and theory. So, as you can see, there is a wide variety of practice within the field of computer science.
