Keith’s Answer

The software engineers I worked with were making anywhere from $80 to $100K a year but they had a number of years of experience. The best way to find out is to check here:

Daniel’s Answer

It varies a lot. If we're talking just the USA, it varies on dimensions:

  • City

  • Company

  • Years of experience

  • Specific industry

Certain cities pay more. SF, NYC, Seattle may pay more than the Midwest, for example.

Certain companies pay more. E.g. Facebook may offer a starting total comp north of $140k a year, while a small start-up may put you at $50k or less.

Salary may also vary a lot based on experience - depending on the above factors, a new grad may make half as much or less compared to someone with a lot of experience.

Finally, some industries pay more, some pay less. Game industry pays really low, finance industry can pay much more. Etc.

So the answer is basically, anywhere between 50/60k and hundreds upon hundreds of thousands. You can look up industry averages, they probably are somewhere around 70k starting, 100k with a bunch of experience.

Omar’s Answer

This question is very general. But the salary depends on the Country/City and the type of language you can develop in (i.e. Perl, Java...etc) as well as the experience you have had. There are many sites online to give you a "Ball-park" how much a software Engineer can earn based on the city and the "knowledge". Link below is for Glassdoor website which provides salaries based on zip code.
