My answer may be too late for you since your question is from a few years ago. However I will answer this question just in case someone else like you wants to know.

If you are interested in joining a Co-op program when in College then your best bet is to seek out colleges that have an official co-op program. For a current list of colleges/universities that offer internship or co-op programs check out the link below.

The colleges listed in the above link are not necessarily only engineering colleges, but you can find colleges that offer co-ops in engineering specifically, if that is your goal.

I don't think it is possible to get a coop before you join an engineering program. You can always try though! Apply to coop positions at engineer firms.
