Why are accountants usually the first career that people associate with miserable and bored people?

From my teacher, counselor, to my mentor/boss, all have told me that I need to be 100% sure that accounting is the right path for me. They then will go on to cite examples of accountants that they know who are miserable and hates waking up to go to work each day. Why are accountants always associated with such negative connotations? Is there any accountants here who can offer me some insight and address my fear of becoming these forlorn accountants?

Esther,

Good question. Keep in mind that all people are unique in their strengths and weaknesses. As a result what is ideal for one individual may be a nightmare for another. The stories of accountants that are miserable at their job are probably true, but not for a reason that should scare you away. When people are aligned with occupations that they are not suited for, work can be miserable.

If you are passionate and have a proficiency for accounting, I by all means recommend pursuing your interest.

I would also suggest that you search out "successful" accountants for an informational interview. Not all accountants are miserable in their profession. Those that align their passion with their accounting proficiency are not only happy in the accounting profession, but as a byproduct, financially well off.

Best of luck.

Vicki’s Answer

I think that most people think that because there are so many rules to follow (think tax or financial reporting). I believe accounting gives you a good basic business understanding, and it is something that you can really apply to your everyday life as well as be marketable pretty much everywhere. You are not tied to one area of the country, and there are so many variations of "being an accountant" that people don't ever think of, and even in the worst job markets, the accounting background is always valuable.
Trust your gut, if it sounds and "feels" good for you, then go for it!

Marilyn’s Answer

Hi Esther,
Your career is what you make it. Perhaps these people are not interested in working with numbers. Personally, I was not good in math, so I did not pursue a carer in that area. I am however very respectful of those with this skill, and I pay my CPA dearly for what she does for me. I know several people who had a major in accounting, and they have found it quite easy to make a living as a sole proprietor, helping people with their businesses and assisting with taxes. They love the flexibility. I have one relative who travels all over the world assisting one of her clients. I say go for whatever you love and don't worry what others say. It is helpful to talk to those in the field, but those who are not may not be so reliable if they give you negative feedback.
Best of luck,
Marilyn Balke-Lowry

Allen’s Answer

Hi Esther - I encourage you to follow what you like as it will give you the most success and fulfillment. Accounting can be dry and very linear but at the same time there is beauty in numbers and there's something out there for everyone. I majored in engineering and everyone perceived that as "hard" and "boring". I did the major in spite of what others thought and don't regret it at all.

Susan’s Answer

I believe it's because most individuals find math related careers a challenge. I know plenty of individuals who love this work and enjoy putting their great analytical skills to use. If this is your passion, pursue it. Mark Twain said “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
