Matt’s Answer

This is the key to it all right here. I personally feel that more high schools should have a required course for seniors to kick start this process, but here is the baseline for helping combat complacency and staying driven:

  • Figure out how you learn and the best environment for your learning and/or studying.

  • Understand deadlines and the amount of time it will take you to get your work done.

  • Understand that it's all up to you. People may be invested in your success, but you are ultimately responsible for it.

  • Don't feel guilty about choosing studying over going out. There's always going to be something to do or somewhere to go.

  • Find value in everything. It's going to be hard to get motivated for classes you don't enjoy, but find the value in it that will make you successful in the future.

Eileen’s Answer

Find people that have similar goals. Hang out with them. Create study groups. Also, find things to do that interest you and that will expand your knowledge base. Newark and the surrounding areas have some great places to go to expand your knowledge base. See if you can team up with a teacher in your school that will mentor you and challenge you to stay focused. You got this! You can do anything you put your mind to.

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Kukiele K. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

One additional step that may be helpful to staying on track....envisioning what life will be like when you are finished. As with any important goal, there is a reason why we do what we do. For instance, why we pick up a new health habit, why we take extra care when doing a task or job, why we spend time going to college/university to further our education. In general, we know that when we complete these sorts of important goals, we will be in a better position than having not done these things. When we take the time to envision how things will be better once we are done, for instance what our financial stability could be, what our career path could be once we graduate and obtain our degree...once we can see the other side of that important goal, it could be come a tremendous motivating force to stay focused.

Hope you find this answer helpful and best of luck to you!
