Hey Jimmy,

I currently help design servers for Dell Technologies. If you like the physical aspect of the mechanical keys and system assembly rather than designing boards and circuits, I recommend getting a degree in Mechanical engineering. That would allow you to find a job at Dell or HPE. Many of those roles are fulfilled in SE Asia at ODM's, so the number of mechanical engineers working on designing the physical aspect of a computer in the US is stable or on the decline.

Computers are currently transforming, though. As 5G and edge computing takes hold, computers will begin to pop up in products and places we can't imagine today. There will always be a role for someone to design the parts, select the materials, and ensure that assembly will work in mass production.

Good luck with whatever path you choose,
Paul

Hi Jimmy,

I'm an infrastructure Engineer and I'm involved with everything from corporate email issues to building servers. Computer engineer is really a broad title, but the IT industry is very broad itself. It sounds like you're on the right industry track if you love to build computers and keyboards, but you're going to need to start thinking about which part of the IT world you would like become involved with. For example, you may fit well on the infrastructure side, where you may be building servers and\or computers to support some type of application. There are many other areas to think about as well, for example, computer programming (coding), Information Security, (protecting all of the computer infrastructure from the bad guys out there), and desktop engineering (supporting the computers and applications that people use everyday to do their job), just to name few areas. Keep at your passion but start thinking about where your passion might best mesh with which part of the IT industry.

Good Luck!
Bill

If you have a passion for building computers, depending on your grade level, look for classes offered in your school that are computer related. Introductory classes in school can range from Industrial Technology lab courses to entry-level programming. You can also subscribe to computer-related publications such as PC Magazine, CNET, etc. Building your own PC can also be very fun and rewarding. You will learn a lot about all the components that go into building a computer. As you continue to go through school, select more advanced computer-related courses that will help you get into a college that offers a computer engineering degree. Best of luck and continue having fun tinkering with computers!
