Bridget’s Answer

Starting a business, whether it is Painting or a tech start-up all begin the same way. Know your market, gather the intel of the competition and potential client base. Create a marketing strategy. Assuming the reason you want to own a painting company is because you already know how to paint, then the next steps would be to build your company by creating a name, brand, and then doing the basic steps of filing as a business in your state. File for an EIN (federal tax id) and get a business phone line wither by getting a specific phone via your provider or just getting a VIOP (virtual phone number that connects to your current phone line, just uses a different number), make sure your address can be used for a business, a PO box is a waste of money as potential finacers will want you to have your own physical address. You may need capital (business finding) to start unless you already have materials. Figure out how you are going to charge for your services. Make sure you choose an accounting program that will work with your type of business - quickbooks is a standard, but there are lots of programs out there to use. Then get clients and start doing the job. An average price for paint per square foot ranges from 75 cents to $1.50 with the national average being $1.35 per sq ft. You may want to include other handyman chores into the painting job such as putty work and minor finishing touches like removing and installing furniture, electrcial outlet covers etc as these items can be involved with a paint job - so you will want to charge for them.

Could you give us a little more information: do you mean interior/exterior house painting? Commercial or residential painting? Creative arts painting? I'm happy to help, just need a little more info. Thanks.

Hassan’s Answer

Personally, I'd start by getting experience to ensure I'd know how to do the job well. Contact local painters to see if any of them are looking for Interns or apprentices.

Once you have enough actual experiences and hopefully customer references then you can strike out on your own. https://edpnc.com/start-or-grow-a-business/start-a-business/ has a good guide for NC and https://www.propaintingcontractor.com/start-painting-business-north-carolina/ is painting specific.
