David’s Answer

You do not need any particular degree to be a film producer. There are, however, several skills you should have, and there are several ways to get them.

You should understand contracts. You can take classes in contract law, collective bargaining, labor law, English, writing, etc., to understand and be able to read, write and edit contracts. Perhaps you could intern with a law firm or a labor union. A law degree, while challenging and expensive, can give you a lot of the skills you need to be a successful film producer.

You should understand budgets. You can major in accounting or business, and take many classes that will help you understand money, budgets, how to make them and how to read them.

You should understand people. Take classes in public speaking, interpersonal communications, psychology, and more to understand how people react in different circumstances.

It might be a good idea to go to college in Los Angeles, or a place where films are regularly produced, and try to get an internship with a producer or production company.

David recommends the following next steps:

Talk to a career counselor at school about schools that specialize in film and film production.
Search for film producers in your area (if any) and write and ask for an informational interview.
