Sarah’s Answer

I'm guessing you are asking about skills outside the obvious, like actual programming skills, logic, and critical thinking.

Other important skills you should learn in college while studying engineering are:
- Teamwork. Engineering is a team sport! Making a good product means having people from different disciplines coming together.
- Communication. If you can't communicate your ideas to your colleagues, managers, or stakeholders, you won't be able to succeed.
- Professionalism, such as how to conduct yourself in the workplace, at conferences, etc.

A lot of these skills are learned in the classroom, but some are better learned in engineering societies (for example, IEEE or SWE) or in internships. Make sure to explore and take advantage of all opportunities available at your university!

Hi Edwin W. Thanks for this thoughtful question.

Totally agree with the feedback that Sarah has provided. I will add a few more skills that you can possibly learn while majoring in computer engineering.
1) Tenacity. This gets built up over time primarily through trial and error. It is rare that a computer program that you design works exactly right the first time but taking the time to build on what does work...that effort sets up the building blocks to your ability to learn effective methods for good programming.
2)Networking. Similar to the teamwork feedback, there is such a thing as "synergy" that can develop between you and others that over time allows you and others, as a team, to build good things and to create output that complements each other. When that happens, you will likely build good partnerships that could be applied to future work together.
3)An appreciation for the scope of your work. Whether you are working on a project to complete an individual task or as part of a team for a bigger project, understanding the scope of your capabilities (and where and how to grow that scope when needed) will be a good add in terms of the skills you can gain while majoring in (and working in) computer science.

Hope you find this helpful and best of luck to you!

I will say for computer engineering you will also learn a lot of electrical engineering skills because of the hardware component of the degree. I would consider exploring computer science as well to see if you enjoy just the coding aspect or hardware as well.
