Jessica’s Answer

Some good skills to develop now are geometry (the properties of space), trigonometry (the study of side lengths and angles of triangles), art (specifically perspective), modeling (think Legos or K'nex), and AutoCAD or other 3D digital drafting software. I worked in an architecture firm in college (circa. 2013) and AutoCAD was the go-to program for our architects and interior designers. While I am not an architect myself, I was often told I could be a successful architect due to my strong mathematical skills, problem-solving, attention to detail, and artistic eye. I highly suggest also getting used to drawing with rulers. The ability to draw straight lines on a grid with perspective and draw things to scale is critical to being a very organized, detail-oriented architect. Details are very important for architects because incorrect math while creating a building could mean catastrophic failures that could be both hazardous and even fatal to occupants of the building.

Aric’s Answer

Hi Josh, It would be great to know what stage in life you are currently, to determine what skills would be helpful. However a skill that will always be helpful is just becoming observant! Such a silly thing right? but seriously take everything in around you and notice how objects effect your mood. Enjoy looking at shadows or shapes of different object. Imagine a shape that is the inverse of what you are looking at or just thinking about the negative space. Looking more carefully at your surrounding will allow you to become more keenly aware of your environment which is crucial to great design. When you become an architect you want to impact those who experience your work and the only way to do that is to understand spatial concepts and how shapes, shadows, massing, objects, light and much more influence your emotions.
Of course other skills include art, being able to capture that information mentioned. Try an exercise for yourself like this: grab a small twig from a tree with some shape to it, rotate the twig and then draw the space the twig created when you rotated it. ABSTRACT THINKING!
Enjoy and good luck!!
