Does not having an internship make my resume weaker?

Accounting student at Towson university #financial-accounting #job-application

Thank you comment icon There is no doubt that a good internship have a good impact on your resume. It is kind of ketchup with fries which adds an extra taste to your fries. Like this, I think it adds an extra taste on your resume which attracts the interviewer. Mubashar

Michael’s Answer

Ayomide,

I'm going to be honest with you. Internships definitely help... a lot. They provide you with exposure to the working environment in the corporate world. You gain a lot of training, the company will teach you new skills, and usually at the end, you give a presentation about what you learned and any projects you might have had, which is great public speaking experience. They also give you a chance to network. I advise you to take up as many internship opportunities as you can because it might even lead to a full time position once you graduate. So, to answer your question, internships do not make your resume weaker.

Alexandra’s Answer

Internships are a great thing to do.
In my view, it demonstrates a willingness to work, see how companies work and see what you actually like doing.
We all need to start somewhere and I personally found that my internships helped me to get my first job. I was able to explain what I learnt from them in interviews and people might actually be reluctant to offer a job to someone who has never done an internship.

I think internships are great but they can also be hard to get. Volunteering or other ways to get involved in your community can also be good things for you and for your CV.
Good luck!

Laura’s Answer

Ayomide,

I agree with what Michael said and would highly encourage you to seek out an internship while you are in school. If you have a strong resume in other areas such as your education, GPAs, and extracurriculars, this will help but if you are considering public accounting the majority of your peers applying for the same position will likely have internship experiences as well which would enhance your resume. If you do not have time to fit an internship in before graduating than I suggest joining a professional organization such as the AICPA and starting to network with professionals in the industry and taking an active role in the group. I would also suggest taking a leadership position in a student organization you are involved in.

I hope this helps!
