I am not sure what major you are in. It may have different freelance opportunities subject to the skills and knowledge you possess.
For example, if you possess technology skills, you may work on some freelance projects on developing apps, web, etc. projects for some companies. If possess design skills, you may work on Web Page design, etc.
On other hand, would you consider to run some business online? If you good at cooking, would you consider to make some cakes, cookies, etc. You can prepare it when receiving orders. Alternatively, you can design and make accessories and sell it online.
There are plenty opportunities that you can think of.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

While I did do freelance projects while in school for graphic design, I found an internship to be much more beneficial to my skills and overall career. It's definitely great for you to be thinking about freelance design at such an early point in your career. This will help you with your communication skills and get you good work for your portfolio. Networking is very important to getting freelance clients, so make sure you are maintaining positive relationships with your current clients, posting about your work online, and making connections with new potential clients. It might be good to approach student organizations on your campus who need design work done.

As a student, you might be getting clients who are looking for cheap, quick work, so make sure you are also protecting yourself with contracts. AIGA offers great advice about contracts for designers. Find more info here: http://www.aiga.org/standard-agreement. Don't expect that you will get paid tremendous amounts of money, since you are still a student, but don't make sure you are getting paid worth your time. There are also many resources online about how to price your work as a freelancer. Good luck!
