Danah’s Answer

I am assuming you mean security such as protection and not cyber security. Usually security companies are looking for someone with a clean background (no criminal activity), no drug or alcohol abuse, stable, and personable. I do know that a lot of the larger security companies also hire a lot of ex-military or ex-law enforcement so those may be career steps you also want to consider.

James’s Answer

The biggest skill that I can't emphasize enough is critical thinking. Train your mind to think quickly in difficult situations. That is the most important thing someone in law enforcement can possess. Patience is another, as there will be long periods of time in your job where nothing happens. You cannot lose focus during these times.

Jason’s Answer

Hi Joshua, being skilled in observation, trend and pattern recognition, and problem solving are probably some good ones to develop. Security posts can go from slow to fast any minute so building up your personal resilience to be able to stay focused over long stretches of down time is critical. Most modern security roles also require operating security systems so get familiar with audio/video technology and administrative tasks like report writing and verbal and written communication.
