Hi Derk, drpending on where you're posted the security guard or officer role can be difficult but not in the traditional sense. Repetitive tasks and long periods of downtime for example is common which makes catching that one bad guy from doing harm very difficult and sometimes a stroke of luck. There are other positions where you're working with technology and systems doing video investigations and auditing access control logs, which can be long and strenuous. Being a security guard or officer requires a good amount of personal resilience to do the job well enough to standout and progress in your career.

It depends on where you work and how many problems normally happens. While it can be risky since you will be in charge of protecting the well being of the patrons and employees, you will also have to deal with theft and vandalism.

Most of the time security guards are there to provide an extra sense of security of patrons and employees while also reducing the amount of crimes that happens within the stores with their presence.

For the security guards that I've seen in the Downtown Seattle area (which has a high crime rate) security guards mostly stand near the front of stores or occasionally walk around to check if everything is safe. For other stores the security guards open the front door for customers and makes sure no troublemakers enters the store.

Pay for security guards isn't the best, though the job market for security guards is increasing. Most of the time the job is stress free other than the few times you might have to deal with a problem or two.

I prefer the term "challenging" instead of "difficult" but the truth is the job/position can be what you make of it. A standard security officer responsibilities are relatively straight forward based on site, organization, shift, etc. The goal is always asking for more responsibility so the role doesn't become stagnant (or routine). This will allow you to gain additional experience, exposure to new things (i.e. shift lead, investigator, etc.) and possible promotional opportunities.
