Patty’s Answer

Hi .. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and my Mom was a nurse for over 40 years. She loved her profession and was a very caring and nurturing nurse. She worked in a general surgeons office for 20 years and she never complained . She didn't work on the weekends. After leaving the surgeons office ( due to moving to a new city) she finished her career in the hospital setting . The biggest complaint was the hours she worked . But that was 25 yrs ago and nursing schedules have changed . My niece is a nurse in Lubbock and is working in the hospital. She is compassionate and has a caring heart . If you are drawn to helping people and a good listener then check out nursing . It's a great career for flexibility and great pay. I still would love to add nursing to my profession . Good Luck

Hi Madelyn! My mother has been a nurse for ~20 years. Although she loves her occupation and overall the mission of being a nurse, the society we live in today undervalues health care workers to a great extent- especially nurses. I definitely do not want to discourage you on pursuing this career choice, but I do think you should be aware of what the health care field environment is like. Right now, patient care and safe staffing is an issue with nurses in California, resulting in a strike. Maybe it is not as bad in different states, though! I can tell you that from my mother's experiences, being a nurse has been very fulfilling and she used to love it. It's just very unfortunate how overlooked and undervalued nurses can be, along with the healthcare field overall. This has definitely taken a toll on her and can be discouraging. It can be stressful at times, but I believe people can also find a better environment to work in. Nursing also has a variety of what you can do!

A piece of advice I wish someone shared with me was to dip into the tech industry, since that is where our world seems to be climbing at with great measures and extraordinary results. To tie it all in, health tech would be the way to go! Best of both worlds. There's a lot out there, I hope you find where your passions truly lie and do whatever makes you happy. Good luck!
