What route would best lead to becoming a professional musician/composer?

I am going to continue playing music as I have been doing for years, however, I wish to take it to the next level. I currently play the Baritone, Trombone, and Piano, in addition to using a Digital Audio Workshop, yet I am not quite sure where to go from here. I plan on majoring in music, but I do not know what that will bring or where it will directly take me. What options are available and how would they help me reach these goals?

CLAUDIO’s Answer

Study first and then start getting gigs in the aspect of the career you like the most, for example if you are more of a player, then get gigs playing live or as a studio musician. etc.
The fact of getting out there and meeting musicians, composers, singers producers, etc. will lead to things happening in your career. The most important fact is contacts, as in any other career.
Hope that helps.

Ayden’s Answer

Having your degree will open many doors, especially in regards to education or instrument repair or even organized performances, but it's all about who you know. I recommend getting cosy with your local artists - attend shows, get your name out there. Don't be afraid to brag. Private teaching can also help get your name out there, especially if you can offer something more "niche" like trombone. The options are endless, so long as you're creative. Try talking to local orchestra members, producers, or bands to see what opportunities are out there. The one downside to the arts is the lack of structured careers avaliable, but if you're a people person, getting hired in the industry shouldn't be too difficult.
