Nakul’s Answer

As mentioned by a few others, there are varying avenues to advance your photography business while in college. I was a sports photographer for the marketing department, and even though they didn't pay me, they featured me on their instagram account often, which lead to people driving to my website and buying prints. Sometimes doing the leg work without any pay is tough, but it can pay off down the road. Plus, I enjoyed being on the court or out on the field during those sporting events, because it brought even more publicity to me.

I like the answer Michael Reinhardt posted. Unfortunately, you did not indicate what sort of photo business you have going. Business cards and a website with only your best images would be helpful. Figure out what you want to shoot, who has a need for that type of photography and reach out to them for assignments. As a photographer, you are a marketing guy 80% of the time and actually taking photographs 20% of the time.

Michael’s Answer

First, work on your college newspaper and/or yearbook.
Second, get some business cards printed.
Third, advertise your business with flyers on local bulletin boards. Feature couples' specials for "date night," sports events, Christmas holiday events, Valentine's Day and such.
